You Were Never Separate

There is a curious difference between two words that sound almost identical.
Soul.
Sole.
One speaks of connection. The other speaks of separation.
Much of modern life seems dedicated to turning us into soles. We are taught to be independent, self-sufficient, and self-made. We are encouraged to stand on our own, solve our own problems, and carry our burdens quietly. We celebrate individual achievement and personal success.
Yet I wonder if this is not the source of so much loneliness.
Perhaps we were never meant to be a sole.
Perhaps we were always meant to be a soul.
A sole stands alone.
A soul belongs.
A sole moves through the world as a separate being, defining itself by what it owns, accomplishes, or controls. A soul recognizes itself as part of something larger—a living web of relationships that includes family, friends, strangers, ancestors, future generations, the natural world, and the mystery that holds it all together.
A sole asks, How do I survive?
A soul asks, How do I serve?
A sole worries about what it can lose.
A soul discovers what can never truly be taken away.
Life has a way of reminding us of this distinction.
Love reminds us.
Community reminds us.
And grief reminds us most of all.
When someone we love leaves this world, the ache we feel is evidence that we were never separate to begin with. Their laughter still echoes in our memories. Their wisdom continues to guide our choices. Their kindness lives on in the ways we treat others. The threads remain, even when the person is no longer physically present.
A sole experiences loss as an ending.
A soul experiences loss as a change in relationship.
The connection remains.
It simply takes a different form.
Perhaps the journey of becoming is not about learning how to stand alone. Perhaps it is about remembering that we never truly do.
We are souls, not soles.
We are woven together in ways both visible and invisible.
And when we remember this, we begin to live differently.
With more compassion.
With more gratitude.
With more reverence for the countless relationships that make us who we are.
Not separate.
Not alone.
Soul.
